In studio

Say hello to Joe's guitar tech, the Master Mike Manning

Joe's Guitar Tech Mike Manning obviously needs to cater for all of Joe's amplification tastes. Here you can see that in the studio, Joe has a diverse selection of amps to try. Among the gear pictured here are a Marshall head, Soldano head, Peavey head, Peavey 5150 head, three Marshall Cabinets and a Vox amp.

Live

Hear it from Joe himself. Here he is explaining how his 2005 rig is hooked up and what it includes:

"It seems there are questions about my live amp set up, here it is: JS1000's into a pedal board, old school style, with: 535 wah, RMC custom wah, Boss Harmony Machine, Boss DS-1, Barber Burn Unit, Fulltone Ultimate Octave, Fulltone, Deja Vibe, Digitech Whammy, Boss DE-2. On to the front of a JSX head, high input, by Mike offstage. Mike actually has two heads stacked and ready to switch in case of unforseen problems. I have two delays running in the effects loop as well. A single JSX head powers 2 JSX 4x12 bottoms. Sitting on top of those heads are 2 more JSX back-ups, plugged in, turned on, but, not running any speaker cabs. Sometimes, space permitting, we put a third cabinet on stage. We travel with four. Those of you who have been part of the Platinum package groups have seen this set up when attending sound check and have had a walk on stage. This a mono set up. When out of the USA I use local Peavey JSX gear. Here in Mumbai, where I am today, I will use a local JSX amp and speakers, and leave it here in India when the tour is over. It's a dream come true to have my signature series gear meet me whereever I am in the world and always sound so great. Much love to my Peavey buddies(:?)... Joe"

Joe Satriani's choice of equipment is comprehensive. However, for his live performances he keeps things fairly simple. Whether it is in the studio recording albums like Crystal Planet, or on the road with G3, Joe can't go past the following bits and pieces to achieve his fantastic sound:

Ibanez Guitars ( JS Electric and Acoustic )-his current favourite being 'Chrome Boy'
DigiTech Whammy Pedal
Dunlop Wah-Wah
Michael Fuller Full-Tone Effects Ultimate Octave Pedal
(He uses this to good effect on songs like 'Cool #9')
Boss DS-1
Chandler Digital Delays
'69 Marshall Amp (25-watt speakers)
Marshall Amp (Modern Cabinet-25-watt speakers)

For the second G3 Tour, Joe used the following equipment hooked up to the Marshall amp using a Marshall effects loop in a pedalboard set-up:
Ibanez JS Series Guitars
Marshal Effects Loop comprising of:
Boss CE-2
Boss DD-2
Boss DS-1
DigiTech Whammy
Vox Wah Wah

And finally:
Chandler Digital Delays
