Q1. What is Team Chaos?
A. Team Chaos is a concept based around a collection of individual cyclists from different walks of life (Chaos) who enjoy Bush Cycle Touring together (Team) - hence the name Team Chaos. The organisation does not extend beyond establishing contact details and common meeting points for activities. All participate as individuals and must be self reliant. [Top] |
Q2. When was Team Chaos formed?
A. In 1991 on the Great Queensland Bike Ride with a group of three cyclists. [Top] |
Q3. What does Team Chaos Do?
A. We regularly undertake weekend long rides in the bush and occasionally longer rides during the course of the year. [Top] |
Q4. Is Team Chaos a club?
A. No. We are a social group of Bush Cycle Tourers. There is no membership list and there are no office holders of any nature. [Top] |
Q5. What is Bush Cycle Touring?
A. Bush Cycle Touring is exactly how it sounds. It means riding in the bush to enjoy the scenery, spending the night outdoors, having campfires, and all that stuff. [Top] |
Q6. I'm a beginner to Mountain Biking. Is Team Chaos for me?
A. Some of the places we go to can be a bit hard to get to. This could include steep ascents and descents with a heavily loaded bike (up to 25kg above bike and rider weight). We often will ride up to 40km per day to get to camp and then have to do it all again the next day to get home. So the question should be, "Am I capable of this kind of activity with the level of fitness & experience I have?" Only you can answer that question. [Top] |
Q7. I'm into racing & being competitive. Is Team Chaos for me?
A. Actually no. We ride with panniers and are kind of slow. You would always win, which wouldn't be fun for us, and would get kind of boring for you as well. Seriously though, there are plenty of racing clubs in Sydney, for example Western Sydney MTB Club or check the listings at MTB AUS and OZ ON DIRT . [Top] |
Q8. What kind of rides do Team Chaos have?
A. We do unsupported overnight mountain bike touring in the bush. This means we carry everything we need for the weekend ourselves. There are no back up vehicles. [Top] |
Q9. Where do you stay on your rides?
A. We typically camp out in the bush. We can do this because we carry our own sleeping bags and tents etc. We do not stay in pubs or hotels or motels. [Top] |
Q10. Does Team Chaos do day rides?
A. Only very occasionally. This means maybe 2 or 3 a year at most. We prefer to concentrate on overnight weekend rides. [Top] |
Q11. I want to do day rides. Can you help me?
A. A good place to start for day rides is Sven Klinge's book "Cycling the Bush - 100 rides in New South Wales" published by Hill of Content. ISBN 0-85572-204-5. It is available at good bookstores and is relatively inexpensive. There may be editions available for other states of Australia. Also your state cycling body, may organise day rides for cyclists. Check with the Bicycle Federation of Australia for your state cycling body's URL. [Top] |
Q12. Is there a membership fee to join Team Chaos?
A. Since there is no organisational structure to Team Chaos, there is no membership fee. Just a simple initiation ceremony to perform. [Top] |
Q13. How much do Team Chaos rides cost?
A. The only costs involved are if someone gives you a lift to the start of the ride or back home (or both). The amount is worked out between you and the driver and goes towards covering the cost of petrol used and wear & tear on the vehicle. [Top] |
Q14. What sort of bike do I need for a Team Chaos ride?
A. A mountain bike in good working order. We recommend Shimano STX-RC as a minimum level of componentry. Anything less (Alivio, Acera-X etc) would be too unreliable. Suspension is not necessary but provides a higher level of comfort and control over rigid forks. Ultimately the choice is yours. [Top] |
Q15. What equipment do I need for a Team Chaos ride?
A. The basic equipment you need for one of our rides would be;
Q16. What else do I need to bring?
A. Food & clothing for the duration of the ride. [Top] |
Q17. How much should I expect to spend to get set up for Bush Cycle Touring?
A. A rough estimate would be A$2000 to $3000 (including GST), over and above the cost of your bike. This would ensure you had good quality gear that will last. [Top] |
Q18. I'm still with you. What do I do next?
A. Come on one of our rides and enjoy the great outdoors. Our rides calendar can be found here . Oh, and remember to tell someone responsible where you are going. [Top] |
